It is not easy to be the outlier, the one who opts to do things differently, to chart a course that may not be the one conventional wisdom says is the most acceptable. Still, now more than ever, we need people who are willing to tune in to that different beat within, even if it means you’re the only one who feels the rhythm.
We need to tell ourselves that, if we chose, we are capable of shutting out the cacophony of chaos that swirls around us on the daily, just long enough to be still. When we do, we often find the path that leads us to the guidance we are seeking.
But when we look to others to tell us what to think, who to believe and how to feel, we forfeit the very thing that strengthens us.
I know from experience that getting still before taking a stand is not always easy. I’ve felt some gale force winds in the middle of life’s storms that tried to bend me to their will, and I have nearly been blown off course. I’ve also seen the damage that’s been done to those whose rapid responses to those fickle winds, and quick reactions to every wave that washes up, have whipped them into a frenzy.
When our steering veers away from where we know we should be, when we allow ourselves to be distracted by what’s going on in that very moment instead of focusing on what lies ahead, we often suffer for it.
Now I’ve discovered how to recognize the signs that let me know when my navigation system is out of alignment. It those times when I stop trusting my gut and start looking for affirmation outside of myself. It’s those times when I pay more attention to what outsiders say and feel than what I know to be true for me. It’s those moments when I start agreeing to do things that, if I had taken just one more second to think about it, I probably would have said no.
The different beat that comes from within, the small voice that assures you that you are making the right choices and sound decisions, is your greatest ally. Don’t allow the noise of the world to drown it out. Trust yourself, and your instincts should keep you on beat, step by step.
